B.Michaael & Mor Air – Modern Séance

Modern Séance is the brainchild of two long-time friends and musicians, B.Michaael (Branton Olfert) and Mor Air (Colin Moir). Both born in Canada, the two met in Vancouver, BC, instantly bonding over a shared love of underground and left-field music. While on their own, they’ve operated under various guises–Colin most notable for his Spurz alias before pivoting to his current Mor Air project, Branton spending time on numerous side projects and film work–the two never managed to solidifying a fully realised project from sessions in the studio together.

That changed when Colin, who currently resides in London, UK took a trip home for the holidays. After a few non-stop days in Branton’s home studio, the majority of Modern Séance was fleshed out. A push/pull of sensibilities and influences, the record employs Olfert’s deft touch for creating dense, cacophonic walls of sound and feedback using acoustic and electronic sources, as Moir tames the jagged edges with the ambient melodic sensibilities he was praised for in his debut effort Life Behind Glass last year on Prague’s Genot Centre. The result is at times unsettling, with moments of euphoria quickly cut down by roiling noise that demands attention before finally releasing the listener into a wash of sound.
